Discussion Question: Helping Parents to Understand Learning Disabilities


In your class you have a student who has recently been diagnosed with learning disabilities.  The mother calls you and she is in a mild panic.  What does it mean, she asks?  What will happen to her child?  Will he be able to learn to read?  She has so many questions!

You set up a meeting with her in two days.  What will you tell her?  Read through the following resources.  Prepare at least 10 talking points that you want to share with the mom.  Be sure to explain your talking points.  For instance, if you write:

1. Discuss the resources that are available to the student and parent.  Please explain a few of the  resources you would discuss.

2.  Discuss the ways that the parent can support and encourage their child at home. What are some of the ways you will provide?

3.  What questions or concerns do you have for me?  This is not a talking point that you will take from these resources.  Do not include this.
